Ask Yourself: “How Bad do I REALLY want it?”
A lot of people say they want things or to accomplish this or that. I suppose it’s is in our nature to want what we don’t have or say we want to achieve things, but in life, the things that we want come at a price. The price usually involves a lot of hard work, unending dedication to accomplish your goal and avoiding distractions that will knock you off course.
If you “SAY” to yourself; you want to accomplish something (and you really do), you have to be willing to not only work for it, but you have to be willing to work harder than those around you. Just doing the status quo is not going to get you there. You have to be willing to sacrifice for it – while knowing that reaching your goal(s) – is the only option and the only thing standing in the way is your efforts.
For example, in the sport realm, if someone is playing your position and you find yourself sitting on the bench. Instead of pouting and finding excuses – simply ask yourself; How bad do I really want it? What lengths am I willing to go to in order to become the starter and am I willing to sacrifice my personal time in order to put in more work? Plain and simple; if someone is in your way of what you want, you “MUST” find opportunities and ways to work harder than them.
If it is your plan to beat someone out of a spot, you need to realize what they do to make themselves successful, what they work on to become better, how hard they work at those things, and then find ways to “out work them”. For example, in college every athlete is practicing daily (you have to, or you’re not on the team anymore). So how are you going to surpass that person in front of you and get into the starting spot? If they are practicing every day and you’re just doing the same as them, you’ll never catch up.
That’s when those questions you need to ask yourself come into play… You just can’t do what they do, and expect to miraculously wake up one day, better than them. In order to surpass them, you must move forward faster, work more, do extra. If they practice one hour, you practice two and find time to practice when they aren’t!
To many, this may seem like a lot to do and a bit excessive, but to those that want it bad enough – it’s not. And to those that achieve it –they find that the reward is FAR greater than that extra hour of sleep you gave up or the party you missed in order to get those extra reps in.
Honestly, it’s just not enough to want something. You have to take a self-assessment and try to realize how BAD you want it, and what you are willing to do to get there. Now, I framed this blog as sports, but it is just as important in your careers, and personal lives as well.
